Why Burlington County writes so many tickets

Burlington is New Jersey's largest county by land, and three of the state's busiest corridors run straight through it. The New Jersey Turnpike, I-295 and Route 130 all cut north–south across the county, with Routes 38, 70, 73 and 206 feeding traffic between them. The result: township courts along those corridors carry some of the heaviest traffic dockets in South Jersey.

Which court is my Burlington County ticket in?

The municipal court of the town where the stop or incident happened. A Route 73 ticket in Marlton goes to Evesham Township Municipal Court; a Route 130 stop in Cinnaminson goes to Cinnaminson Municipal Court. The court name and its contact information are printed on your summons. Some smaller Burlington County towns share a court with a neighbor, so the court named may sit in a different town than the stop.

Do I really have to show up for a Burlington County court date?

For most routine traffic matters, no. Under New Jersey Court Rule 7:12-3, many municipal cases can be resolved through an attorney appearing on the client’s behalf. We appear in Burlington County courtrooms every week and handle most traffic cases without the client present. Some charges and some judges require a personal appearance, and we tell you up front if yours does.

What will a municipal court lawyer cost me here?

It depends on the charge, and we quote a flat fee before you decide anything. For point tickets, weigh the fee against what a conviction actually costs: fines, MVC surcharges, and three to five years of higher insurance premiums. I got a ticket on the Turnpike or I-295 just passing through. Do I have to come back?

Usually not. Turnpike, I-295 and Route 130 tickets are heard in the municipal court of the township where the stop occurred, and in most cases we appear for out-of-state and long-distance drivers so they never return to New Jersey. Don’t just pay the ticket, though — paying is a guilty plea, and a conviction becomes part of your permanent driving history.
