How do you read a New Jersey driver history abstract?
A certified MVC abstract is an official record of reported accidents, violations and actions such as points credits, suspensions, fee entries and restorations. Read the event date, posting date, court or MVC unit, event code and current status separately.
The fields that answer different questions
- Event date: when the reported occurrence happened.
- Posting date: when MVC entered it on the record.
- Event responsibility: the court or MVC unit associated with the entry.
- Event type and identifier: MVC codes describing the occurrence.
- Points and credits: assessed points and later reductions, which do not erase the historical conviction.
- Suspension and restoration entries: actions affecting status and later restoration events.
Why current status can surprise a driver
A court disposition, payment, elapsed suspension period, surcharge account and MVC restoration are separate events. Do not drive based only on what someone expected to happen; confirm the current MVC status and written restoration where required.
